Auger Boring
Auger boring is a method of underground construction where steel encasement pipe is simultaneously jacked into the earth while a reamer that is attached to auger inside of the steel encasement excavates the face of the embankment. The auger inside the encasement relays the material excavated by the reamer back to the work pit for removal and stockpile. This method eliminates any voids and once complete, the final steel encased product is left ready for subsequent trades to install their chosen carrier product. This method is an accepted method of underground construction for DOT's, Railroads, and others.
Tunneling
Traditional "hand" tunneling is a method where the embankment is excavated with pneumatic tools then a liner product is installed to support the excavated earth. The liner product is continuously installed as the embankment is excavated and removed until the pre-determined stopping point for the tunnel has been accomplished. All work takes place from inside the previously installed rings of liner product. This method follows all OSHA, AASHTO, and AREMA standards and is an accepted method of underground construction for DOT's, Railroads, and others. The most common tunnel liner products include tunnel liner plate (TLP), wood box support system, or steel ribs with wood lagging (rib & board).
Pipe Jacking
Pipe jacking utilizes hydraulic jacks set in a fixed work shaft to advance a rigid pipe, such as steel encasement pipe, reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), or fiberglass pipe (FRP) through the earth while the embankment is excavated from inside the pipe utilizing traditional hand tunneling methods. This method of underground construction follows all OSHA, AASHTO, and AREMA standards and is an accepted method of underground construction for DOT's, Railroads, and others.
